Southeast Missouri is best known today for mile after mile of corn and soy farms, scenic rolling hills, and the Mississippi River. Less well known is the rugged beauty and the varied species of plants and animals that inhabit the region's more primitive areas.
People love to commune with nature and learn more about these features, but they often have everyday duties that keep them closer to their homes, schools, and the internet, and further from nature. Enter the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center.

...once the sun goes down the forest becomes a world of dark trails, eerie owl calls, and critters rustling through bushes out of sight, a perfect experience for Halloween eve.

Discover the forest at night. The creatures won't mind—or will they?
The Missouri Department of Conservation’s Cape Girardeau Nature Center is focused on helping people discover nature year-round, especially in these colder months. The center has indoor exhibits, a wildlife viewing area, scheduled programs, and a two-mile nature trail to help visitors discover nature. Now, the Center is creating new events for young adults to enjoy—including a spooky night hike for a Halloween nature adventure.

There may be hoots. There may be howls. There may be squeaks and scurries at the Spooky Little Night Hike.

Fall is in full swing; leaves are changing, cooler breezes are starting to blow, and migratory birds are making their yearly appearances. Trail of Tears State Park offers many opportunities to spot these birds in multiple habitats from riparian corridors along the river to oak hickory forest. With some luck we might spot migrating waterfowl moving along the Mississippi Flyway. Participants can expect to shuttle from the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center to the park where we will roam searching for birds at stationary points and a short hike.
