Fall hits hard like a Wham-O! One day it's hot; the next, crisp blue skies. 'The wind' adds excitement. It whispers hidden invitations to live wild. Gusts push you, trees bow, hair dances in the breeze. The 573's foliage is bursting with purples, reds, oranges, and yellows in full splendor. The Missouri Department of Conservation's latest report says recent rain in Southeast Missouri—Cape Girardeau, Farmington, and all the areas in between—has made the colors even more vibrant; sumac, hickories, sweet gum, and maples are stealing the show.

'Fall's the perfect kickoff for getting fit'—cool air, killer leaf show, no excuses! Ditch fancy gyms; lace up and go old-school with biking, running, or hiking trails blazing in color. Fall is a perfect time to 'Get Them Kids Out There' to reconnect with nature and battle "nature deficit disorder."  Don't laugh —it's a real thing, and getting really serious. Well, maybe laugh a little — it's good for you.
