573 Heroes: Chasing Their Passions

Updated: Aug 19

When you come from everyday people, it can be hard to convince yourself that you have the same opportunities as everyone else. But why not? It is worthless to believe the world is against you, cheating you out of success. You might tell yourself, “I’m special. The world is against ONLY me.” Psst… here's the truth: the world is harsh for everyone, no matter what you might believe.

And while it is true that cruelty, unfairness, mistrust, jealousy, and greed visit some more than others, there is no magic wand of protection from life’s trials and tribulations. You are not alone in your struggles; life is tough for everyone. Hardships come for us all, and how about this for a kick in the teeth: the longer you let a victim complex hold you down, the more likely you are to miss your opportunities.

Instead of viewing yourself as someone lacking or incapable, take a step back and reframe your perspective. Every setback is a setup for a comeback. Each hardship is a stepping stone on your path to greatness. Stand tall, believe in YOU just as you are, and trust you have the power to create your own reality. You are special, not because of your struggles, but because of how you choose to rise above them. If you can dream it, you can do it!

I am happy to report that here in the 573, there are a lot of people chasing dreams. The American Dream is alive and well. But here’s the catch—you have to work for it. Ah, work—the real American Dream is the freedom to wake up and work for your DREAM. Work hard because hard work pays off.

Michael Toeniskoetter (Cape Girardeau), dreams of being a Paleontologist and is willing to work hard to follow his dream.

Attorney Cira Duffe (Farmington) dreams of being the best Federal Defense Attorney in the region. Here, with her interns, who dream of becoming lawyers just like her.

Keep trying. Keep asking. Keep knocking. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Holding others down has been the weapon of choice of the ugly and bitter amongst us since time began. The 573 Magazine does not approve of that message.

Cyndy Keesee and Steffie Littlefield at Edg-Clif Winery (Potosi) are working hard to craft world-class wines for their visitors to enjoy. Their dream is to bring joy to everyone.
Jack Buerck (Perryville) wants to do more acting. I bet he does it, because he will not give up until it happens.

Dave and Erin Couch, White Trash Customs (Fredericktown) want the best auto repair center in the area—all my cars look great. They know hard work and attention to detail pays off

Skyler Gollaher of Slay Dance Centre (Bonne Terre), dreams of having the greatest dance studio this side of the Mississippi. Knowing Skyler it will happen because she's not afraid to get her hands dirty.

Serial entrepreneur Carisa Stark (Perryville) creates welcoming experiences with her flair for hospitality through Mary Jane Burgers and Brew, The Urban Lofts, The Atrium Hotel, The Warehouse Entertainment Center, and the Tiny Houses of French Village. Carisa knows the secret to success: make a plan and never give up.
Judge Brice Sechrest's (Farmington) hard work is paying off and he's right where he wants to be—the top of his game. Of course, he has a new dream in the works.
The mother/daughter team of Beverly and Misty Brown (Fredericktown) want you to experience the best Glamping experience possible at Fredrock Glampgrounds. Sleep in a gypie wagon, in a teepee, on a bus...their unique stays are crazy in a good way.

Laurie and Rob Ray want their restaurant, Soiree, (Cape Girardeau) to be the trendiest spot for dinner and drinks in town. Their dream is coming to fruition.
Vicki Oberle of Fisher Furniture (Ironton) knows the meaning of hard work and how keeping your dream alive pays off.
Miss Kim & Co, a fashion bouique (Potosi) is the brian child of Kim Smith. She dreams of a return to main street in person shopping.
Katey and David John, owners of Num Nums (Marquand) just want you to experience the greatest Rubin sandwich on the planet—they are that good!
Reuben sandwich on dark bread with chips, wrapped in paper with comics. Candy and chocolate coins nearby on a granite surface.
Start your dream today. What one person can do, another can do. It's time to crawl out of that sunken sofa. Go back to school, start that new business, walk your dog. Do something. Do anything. Drag yourself away from the social media trap. Get out there. Live your life and BECOME special.
