The 4th of July has always been more than fireworks and backyard barbecues for me. Growing up in Missouri and now living deep in Missouri’s 573 region, I see Independence Day as a living reminder of the fierce independence that built this country—and still fuels dreamers like us today. Yes, all 573 readers are fiercely independent and dreamers.

Pursue your happiness...
As a filmmaker, photographer, and storyteller, I chase that same spirit every day, and every time I pick up a camera. Whether I’m shooting one of the amazing places here in the 573 or shooting one of the hard-working and passionate people living here, I’m exercising the freedom our founders fought for: the right to create without permission, to tell stories that matter, and to build something real right here—be it a magazine or a feature film without having to get permission or fear of saying the wrong thing.

...whatever it may be.
This year, the 4th hits differently, celebrating 250 years since the Declaration of Independence from England. I think of my great-uncle, who served in the 101st Rangers and parachuted into France on D-Day during WW2. I think of my father, who served in the Navy as a Master of Arms on the aircraft carrier Bataan during the Korean War. I think of my experience in the Air Force and now my son serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force working on cybersecurity; their quiet service echoes the sacrifices that secure our liberties.

To me, this 4th is about personal sovereignty. It’s the courage to pursue your own path, to speak your truth, and to create a more perfect place in this world. It’s the spark that says the American Dream, with all its warts, is still alive in every independent artist, small business owner, and road-warrior explorer chasing light and excitement across the 573. Get out there!

This Independence Day, I’ll be at the Edg Clif Heritage Celebration with my camera, honoring the past and capturing a greater future. Join me. I have big plans for this year, and 573 is launching several new things for the region before the end of this year—keep your eyes open for those.
Get Out There! Visit somewhere. Celebrate your freedom. Go for a hike. Sing at a spring. Do something. Do anything. Get out there, that sunken sofa won't miss you—time's a-wasting!
